Jenty became a mother when she was 16 years old while in Form Two. She dropped out of school and stayed at home for two years to care for the baby.
“I wanted to go back to school but there was no one to help me care for my baby,” says Jenty, a resident of Sintaan in Marigat in Baringo County. “My father said he did not have money to take me back to school.”
Jenty had despaired when Nelly, a Binti Shujaa peer mentor heard about her case and visited her home.
“Nelly promised to care for the baby so that I could return to school,” says Jenty.
Jenty went back to her school and was readmitted. She applied and got a scholarship from the local Constituency Development Fund.
Nelly kept her word and cared for the baby when Jenty was in school until she sat her high school final exams in November 2019.
USAID’s Afya Uzazi trained 197 Binti Shujaas like Nelly.
