Global Handwashing Day, Kasisit Primary School, Baringo

Afya Uzazi Program marked the 2018 Global Handwashing Day on October 15th, with the main celebration held at Kasisit Primary School in Baringo County. Dozens of pupils representing health clubs in six local schools covered at the venue and took part in a series of activities to promote handwashing and hygiene. Contestants in an art competition displayed their creative works promoting handwashing in schools and homes. The health club member and health officials votes on the winning photos. The winners received presents and will take part in this year’s World Toilet Day activities usually marked on November 19th. After the Global Handwashing Day celebrations, the club members and patron shared messages to promote handwashing with their respective schools. Promoting handwashing is an important part of water, health, sanitation and hygiene interventions implemented by the County Health and Education Department in collaboration with USAID’s Afya Uzazi program. These interventions include community-led total sanitation (CLTS) raise household and school sanitation standards.

Key results of CLTS in Baringo:

  • 18 of 90 villages in the ward triggered towards achieving open-defecation free (ODF) status
  • 15 villages claimed an ODF status and 12 verified as ODF.
  • Four villages certified as ODF and ready for celebration on the World Toilet Day.
